I voted freedom.. I was gonna pick style but realized that one can change styles and still be a "good" artist - I will forever grow as an artist (and a person).

in 80% of the time i am a bad artist. i only make good stuff when i put feeling into them, when they're meaningful. style=zero artistically speaking (in my opinion). or...close to it.

Everything.

Someone might have the freedom, but he might not have the skill or vice versa. That makes him an artist, not a good artist. Yes, his works can have just the same amount of meaning like the works of an artist that has all of the above, but hey... There are a lot of other people that can do the same, that want to give the same (or similar) message...

Oh my god I'm really sorry. I just kept on writing and writing and I couldn't stop. lol. Uhm, long comment warning:

A lot of art is subjective, there aren't really any guidelines to what is "good" art and what is "bad." Something that might seem like a random ugly scribble to someone, might turn out to be a masterpiece to somebody else. I don't consider myself a good artist--there is always something to improve--so I voted into what I think I would judge by if I wanted to say whether the artist was good or not: all of the above. lol. Definitely, my opinion would be first based on the style. Some styles I just really just don't like, but there are exceptions to every rule. Hard work and skill come next. I like seeing artists grow; I sometimes see artists that very clearly have skill but never go anywhere with it. And I also watch artists that I definitely think have skill and always use their skill to the fullest extent to improve themselves and do the best they can. That is just simply awesome. (And then I feel bad because I don't do anything...) The ability to adapt to other styles is not that big in my book, but it's something that will definitely amaze me. I like artists who dabble in something other than their own genre, but not, like, they touch it, say they tried it, and then leave it. Those artists who try out other genres, keep at it, and also improve, are the ones with the most flexibility to please the public.

And also, the public--that's where I will disagree with a lot of people when I say that I disagree with the statement that artists should do art only for themselves. I mean, I agree that artists should always stay true to what they believe in, but they should also try to present their art in a way that would make the public feel what the artist felt when they created the piece. If the artist can portray their feelings to me, that is an absolutely fave in my book. (:

art, is in the eye of the beholder... I am an artist in my own eyes, as I and only I understand the full concept behind my deviations. If others consider me to be one, it may be because of one of the above-mentioned qualities... I try too keep a certain level of diversity, a kind of growing skilllevel and if I've got the time even some complete style twitches...

big up to you bro... you've got all of the above ;) :#1: keep it up.

hard to quantify what makes someone a good artist

if someone goes so far as to go pick up a canvas (or a mouse) and have a go, i think that's good whatever the result
I just like that people are creative:-)

its exciting to sell work, and to get positive comments in here, but maybe a good artist is someone who creates firstly for themselves, because its fun and exciting, and because if you didn't do it you'd go crazy cos its like an addiction and you have no choice but to create, its just in your genes :D

Well.. sort of all the above :D. Skill in my opinion defenetly comes first. It is the one major thing that separates the artist from the others. However hard work and skill are very closely related. I have seen (quite a few) cases in which people with no skill (or almost no skill) have reached impressionable hightes through hard work. Even though they will never be as good as a person that is both skilled and a hard worker, it is still an amazing acomplishment. I might also be tempted to say that skill without work is of next to no importance. You may be able to do things other people can't just with talent but if you don't maintain it through work you may wake up one day and realise that you've wasted away what nature originaly intended for you. In other words skill+hard work = acomplished artist. Next in the line of what's important i think comes style. I am a ferm believer that it comes along with talent. It's importance derives from the fact that it is in most cases a calling card for the artist. ... That's about it. :D

im stil not a good artist myself, cause design is always a process that continues to evolve, but if i had to pick out a few factors about how i achive my work, i think there would be 2 major one... alot of hard work & personal intuition where i make choices that will lead to a certain outcome...

*good poll idea*

This is not a judgement i am ready to make yet. Hopefully in a few yrs after i have covered the basics...
But it's all i want to do, and it's all i can do. I need it, everyday. This is why i hope to be a good artist when i'm ready.

I don't think of myself as a good artist, but rather an improving artist, if that makes sense. I can always tell if I'm improving just by comparing my old stuff with the new and I'm confident in what I do and how I go about doing it.

But whether or not I'm a good artist I tend not to decipher that myself, I usually leave that for my peers to decide.

Despite the opinions of the crowd however, that doesn't stop me from continuously practicing.

My eyes, without them I'd kinda suck. ha.

Regarding aesthetics, the above options all go hand in hand. One can become more creative if they work at it; developing skill and style/s along the way and in doing so they expand their ability to judge aesthetics on what is and isn't visually appealing. I think I'm a good artist compared to some and a bad artist compared to others, either way I love what I do and learn from it.

I feel its a combination of everything you listed, plus probably some luck for extra flavor. Without hard work, what would an artist have to show? persistence and patience are key. adapatability is essential, otherwise an artist could get stuck in a rut and never evolve or change if they wanted to. style is essential, because without flair or a keen sense of what looks good or what works well, the artist's work would just end up looking mediocre and boring. skill fits in with that and also in with hard work, but its able to be improved with time, so the more hard work you put in, and the better you train your style, the more your skill will improve, making things easier for the artist and improving the overall quality of their art. and of course, the most important of all: freedom ^^ without freedom, an artist can no longer be called a fine artist, and they become tools for others to use. freedom is the lack of bindings on an artist's way of thinking and the works that they produce, and it is what is driving modern art today!

hope that helped ^^

the same thing that makes me a good artist makes me a bad artist. I love the freedom of my work, but it also keeps my proficiency at any one particular style relatively low. I am just hoping that over time I will be able to do many things very well, rather than do one thing extremely well. I have heard bad things about putting all of ones eggs in a single basket. I think the main problem I have on here with the freedom of my work is that most people watch me for my graffiti lettering, and when I give them something that isn't graffiti, it is unappreciated.

thing is u have to keep walking man, i totaly disagree with making just one thing extremley well
to me that equals death lol, i ve seen alot of artist on dA that have like 125 works in their galleries
but they all look the same and that i think that is because of the public,it s very hard to be free with so much people around u commenting, when i was making "remix" [link] i caught myself thinking "oh man this is shit what will the people on dA think about it" i realised then that i was not making stuff sincerley but i was driven by my fucking big ego,i think u just have to make stuff u like not the stuff people like lol
peace and thanks for the comment
